10 Terrifying Horror Movies You’ve Probably Never Seen
7. The Sadness (2021)
Aimed at our screens for the first time at the tail-end of the pandemic, Taiwan-set zombie(ish)horror The Sadness is a sight for (and of) sore eyes. A virus transforms Taiwan into an apocalyptic playground of rapacious, murderous maniacs, and they spend the film's 100-minute runtime inflicting some of the most grim acts of suffering imaginable on their fellow countrymen.
The intense and disturbing action and visuals kick off ASAP and never let up, and despite director Rob Jabbaz's best efforts to make us care about the story of a young couple trying to get back to each other, weaponised body parts, umbrellas and secateurs steal the show.
Rather than stoke our fear of shadows and scares, The Sadness foregrounds its terrifying elements, making a show of the hideous and horrifying things human beings are capable of, proving once again (as if Ari Aster hasn't made a strong enough case) that true horror can happen in daylight.
Nonetheless, The Sadness is still a niche pick among horror fans, and though its legend is growing -- thanks primarily to some gut-churning scenes involving sexual acts and eye sockets -- it still has yet to penetrate the mainstream.
