10 Terrifying Low Budget Horror Movies

9. Hell House, LLC

Backcountry 2014
Cognetti Films

Hell House, LLC is a classy flick. Sure, it’s yet another found footage movie – there’s a few on this list, but that shouldn’t surprise you as they’re incredibly cheap to make – but it’s the framing of this one that makes it stand out from the crowd.

Like The Bay, Hell House, LLC is a movie where the footage which has been found has been presented as part of a documentary. You see, Hell House is a spooky house that has been designed and built by a few twenty-somethings, and, as they got it ready in preparation for its Halloween opening, they documented everything they did. Spooky antics ensue, though they quickly ramp up to terrifying and explode in a gory mess on opening night. The film itself is pitched as an investigation of that night, with reporters, police, and the proprietors themselves all taking part in its production.

Hell House, LLC is a clever concept and one that the filmmakers take full advantage of. This film is one you’ve scrolled past a thousand times before on Netflix, thinking that it looks unoriginal, cheap, and completely derivative, but you’re wrong. It’s a sassy, smart, inventive mockumentary which will make you laugh, cringe, and jump in equal measure.
