10 Terrifying Low Budget Horror Movies

8. Backcountry

Backcountry 2014
IFC Midnight

Backcountry is a simple film centred around a pair of hikers. Brash and cocky Alex thinks that it’s entirely appropriate to ignore the advice of a park ranger and take his girlfriend Jen hiking along a closed trail, and soon they find themselves injured and at the mercy of a hungry, man-eating bear.

Apparently based on a true story, Backcountry is not unlike the Stephen King novel The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon in that it takes the simple idea of being lost – possibly pursued – through the woods, and explores the concept as far as it will go.

Initially slow-building where we get to meet and know our characters, Backcountry quickly begins to put the pair through their paces, using all of the natural fears we have – being lost, the dark, giant flesh-eating monster bears – in order to torture the audience almost as much as it does Alex and Jen.

Again, this is a film that you may have skirted over before, but it’s a quick little hitter that’s well worth your time, though maybe don’t watch it just before you head out on a winter woodland wander.
