This Norwegian horror comedy wrings laughs out of its outlandish premise but, as with the genre classic Evil Dead II, it still finds a way to be utterly terrifying.

It’s an enjoyably daft premise; a group of eight medical students off on an Easter ski weekend in the Arctic mountains come face-to-face with a battalion of zombified Nazi soldiers out for blood.

The real skill comes in the writing and direction of Tommy Wirkola, who went on to make the underrated Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton.

Wirkola takes the time to establish a core group of characters before setting out the lore of the film via a surprise visit from a mysterious local resident, who regales the group with the tale of a Nazi battalion who disappeared in a nearby woods while trying to evade Allied forces.

Once the Nazi zombies do arrives, courtesy of an ill-timed avalanche, they waste little time in tearing the tightly bonded group apart – quite literally, in places. Made on a tight budget, Dead Snow defies its lo-fi status with a string of inventive and increasingly bloody deaths.

It makes for that most rare of cinematic beasts: a horror comedy that is both scary and funny.
