10 Things Everyone Gets Wrong About Famous Movies

4. Rick Blaine Utters The Line "Play It Again, Sam" In Casablanca

Iconic piano used in Oscar-winning classic from 1942 Casablanca could fetch $1.2 million at auction At some point in your life, chances are that you've uttered the line "Play it again, Sam," either as a joke at some costume party when you saw somebody had gone as Rick Blaine, or because you liked a song that your friend Sam played on his piano and you genuinely wanted to hear it again. Famous as this line is, however, it's actually not in the movie, nor is there a line that really ever comes as close to sounding anything like it - at least, not from Blaine. The actual line - "You played it for her, you can play it for me. If she can stand it, I can. Play it!" - does include the word "play," but there's no sign of the word "Sam" at all, which may come as a surprise for those people who have seen Casablanca and those who haven't. Having seen the movie on a number of occassions, I still forget that it's not actually anywhere to be found. So where did it come from? To this day, scientists suspect that, quite simply, "a wizard did it."
