10 Things To Expect From The Hunger Games: Mockingjay

5. Finnick's Extended Backstory

In Catching Fire Finnick was a bit of a question mark. Katniss regularly went back and forth on whether she should trust an allegiance with him. Even though Finnick was recommended by Katniss' mentor Haymitch as an ally, she was very distrustful throughout Catching Fire, and rightly so. Finnick was a Career tribute, meaning that he had been trained from a very young age to partake in the Hunger Games, and to win by any means necessary. Throughout the books (and films so far) Careers are characterised by the allegiances they make with each other, and similarly strong tributes, before betraying each other once their foes are picked off. As such it was only natural for Katniss to spend Catching Fire wondering when Finnick was going to stab her in the back when they were in the arena, but thankfully this was not the case. Increased screen-time for Finnick (and Sam Claflin's abs) isn't just a positive aesthetically. In Catching Fire we got a glimpse of his hidden depths - Mags anybody? - but in Mockingjay we got so much more. Finnick references an "Annie", who Mags volunteered in place of for the Quarter Quell in Catching Fire, and whose voice Finnick hears screaming via the torturous Jabberjays at the arena. Not only do we get to meet Annie, but we get to see charming, fleeting Finnick in love. Somewhat more interestingly, as we learn more about Finnick, we learn more about the Capitol and the fates of the other victors. In Catching Fire Finnick told Katniss that he asked for secrets from his lovers at the Capitol, and Mockingjay doesn't hold back in sharing.
