10 Things To Expect From The Hunger Games: Mockingjay

3. Character Development

As earlier discussed, Katniss' role takes a bit of a back seat in Mockingjay. This allows us to begin seeing, and learning, a lot more of the people that have up to that point been her supporting cast. Gale and Finnick are the two most obvious examples, and their increased presence (and backstory) act as huge catalysts to the plot. We find, too, a different side to Peeta, but this will be explored in the next point. What is more interesting is the increased presence of Katniss' family. Previously we have been told that her mother is weak (but a good healer) and her sister, Primrose, is strong (but not strong enough to compete in the Hunger Games). Up until this point we've seen them here and there as peripheral characters, and the most development either of them had was Katniss' association of Primrose with Rue. Mockingjay changes this exponentially. Whilst neither of them become central characters, we see and hear more and more about Prim's talents as a healer, as well as her personal gentleness and warmth that previously we have only really heard of via Katniss. Hopefully the film will pick up on the increased presence of Katniss' family, and potentially extend it. There are references made to Katniss' father in Mockingjay, and so far we know very little about him aside from his death in the mines. As Primrose becomes a more important and filled-out character it would be great to see a bit more of their family back-story, and how both Katniss and Primrose came to be who they are.
