At some point, the LucasFilm braintrust behind Star Wars will have to revisit not only the iconography and time period of the prequels, but the humour and more creature-feature filled nature of their locations, too.

To its credit, The Last Jedi tries to have its prequel cake and eat it, devoting an entire casino setting and chase sequence to a mentality that feels decidedly “prequel-y”.

Sadly, the plot machinations behind this just aren’t propulsive or believable enough for the sequence to land, and you’ll struggle to find anyone online who actually enjoyed this part of the film - let alone the chemistry between Finn and Rose.

It grinds the film to a halt every time we cut back, strands Poe on the ship as he waits on what to do next, and in the end, nothing accomplished here factors into the finale on Crait.
