Here’s a question: What actually killed Luke Skywalker?

Was it pulling off a force projection? Was it taking all those laser blasts by proxy of some damage still being felt? Was it old age, sacrificing himself to become one with the force, maybe a bit too much green milk?

Take your pick, because the movie leaves his death more just as “something that happens” after the climactic battle. Fans have lamented how Luke goes from misguided old man to not even taking part in the final fight, ultimately dying due to… reasons, that in retrospect just don’t add up.

Though he literally becomes a new symbol of peace and hope across the galaxy, the reality is that many audiences simply didn’t “get” why Luke had to die at all.

Going forward, regardless of how you feel, we all have to live in a reality where one of the most popular characters in sci-fi history didn’t get a more beloved sendoff.
