Elevators have always been pretty scary, whether its the creaking noises or the uncertainty as to whether the doors are going to open or not. But since the appearance of The Shining in 1980, elevators have been terrifying for a whole new reason. At the end of the classic film, Wendy searches the hotel for her son, Danny, but in doing so she is met with the sight of blood gushing from the elevator doors, which has become one of the most iconic scenes in movie history. And since then, many other movies have used elevators to strike fear into our hearts - one of these being Blackout, in which three strangers find themselves stuck in an elevator only to find that one of them is a serial killer. With no way out of the lift, they need to get inventive. So even though elevators in themselves can be pretty scary - I know I wouldn't want to get stuck in one for more than thirty seconds - movies have once again managed to turn an everyday object that we often can't avoid into something which leaves us with a nagging fear in the back of our minds every time we enter.
