10 Things Hollywood Must Get Right With The Dark Tower Movie

5. Thou Shalt Stick To The Tone Of The Books

The Dark Tower series has a very specific tone of voice that carries it - almost dream-like - from the very first sentence to the very last. Though a movie adaptation will obviously embody its own cinematic tone (it's a movie, after all, not a work of literature), it is somewhat essential that the director of the movie - and indeed, whoever ends up penning the final script - makes a real effort to evoke the tone brought on by King's writing in the book. This is a harsh world of danger and suffering. And there is a strange, otherworldly quality to the writing - quite different to King's "usual" style - that would enhance the feel of the movie should the filmmakers find a way to translate it over to the movie. Ultimately, though, there is a realness - and a grittiness - to the landscapes and the characters that must be preserved; changing the established tone of a popular book series can often kill its spirit. Hey, it happened with Northern Lights. Please, Hollywood: don't try your "own style" with The Dark Tower. The tone is built-in.
