Perhaps the most common complaint about the DCEU to date is that most of the movies have adopted an dour, funereal tone, while failing to introduce enough levity to stop the films feeling overly self-serious and depressing. While the grimdark tone suits Batman well enough, it felt wholly inappropriate for the Man of Steel.

Thankfully Wonder Woman remedied this by expertly melding the horrors of WWI with a more quirky and amusing fish-out-of-water story. It's been said time and time again that Wonder Woman feels more like a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, and if that means maintaining a keen tonal balance, then that's absolutely on the money.

Thankfully the Justice League trailers so far back up comments from producer Geoff Johns that the team-up film will indeed be much lighter than Batman v Superman, and if nothing else, Wonder Woman's critical and commercial success surely confirms that's the way to go.
