4. The Monuments Men Can't Be As Bad As Critics Are Saying (Can It?)
Despite The Monuments Men being pushed out of last year's awards window, apparently because the visual effects were not complete, I still had high hopes for the film, that this really was the truth and it wasn't for the fact that the film wasn't really very good, and Columbia didn't want to waste money mounting an Oscar campaign for it. The review embargo broke late last week, and the results haven't been pretty: at the time of press, it sits at a dispiriting 42% after 12 reviews, rising from a score in the low-30s a few days ago. Though the tide may shift this week as the bulk of the reviews are let loose, the early consensus seems to be that it's a 3-star jaunt at best, rather than another edgy interpretation of true events, in a similar vein to Ben Affleck's Argo. But the marketing is still strong for this one, selling the ridiculous number of talented actors attached, as well as the comic nature of the story. It's hard to believe those first reviews from what we've seen so far: the hype train on this one keeps rolling, though that may come to an end when audiences finally get their hands on it this week.
