10 Things Man Of Steel 2 Needs To Be Great
6. Lois Lane As More Than A Plot Device
If anything positive has come from the recent and tragic passing of Margot Kidder, its the swift reminder that Lois Lane used to actually mean something.
In the comics, animated series, and in the original films, Lois Lane was a strong and independent character who held her own against Superman. While there have been brief, fleeting glimmers of this in the DCEU thus far, Amy Adams really does deserve better.
Her version of Lois Lane essentially started out as a reporter obsessed with finding out who Superman was and then just became Superman's love interest and resident damsel in distress after that. BvS featured her as little more than a plot device, simply showing up anywhere the script needed her to be. But easily the most egregious use of her was in last year's Justice League, which so far as to completely and totally define her by her relationship to Superman. She's so lost after his death that she can't even be a reporter anymore until he comes back and literally gives her her life back.
Lois Lane is a powerful character in her own right and Man of Steel 2 would do well to remember that. Amy Adams is a badass and is more than capable of delivering a Lois Lane that will hold up for decades to come just like Kidder's, she just needs the right material to do it with.
