10 Things You Need To Know About Fifty Shades Of Grey

6. It's Rated R, With An Unrated DVD To Follow

Though it's long been known that Fifty Shades will be given an R-rating for its sexual content, the producers have also discussed the idea of releasing an NC-17 version into cinemas a short time later. Though the NC-17 rating is the kiss of death for a movie's commercial viability, if it's promoted as a special "double dip" for those who have already seen the R-rated version and want to see a little more nudity, then it pretty much makes sense. However, given the recent comment from Dornan that the movie doesn't feature any full frontal nudity, there's little chance that the movie could even assemble its footage in a way to earn an NC-17 rating. The more likely tactic will be for Universal to release an "unrated" DVD in the summer, featuring lengthier, slightly more graphic sex scenes that nevertheless would have been pretty far away from an NC-17. While an NC-17 special version won't exactly print money for Universal (as a lot of cinema chains would refuse to even show it), the unrated DVD is a common studio tactic to milk audiences of more money, promising "the version that's too hot for theaters", and that's exactly what's going to happen here. This just begs the question, though: quite how watered down will the original theatrical version really be as a result?
