10 Things You Need To Know About Michael Bay's TMNT

3. Expect Pop-Culture References

One common feature that appears in the vast majority of rebooted projects these days is a litany of pop-culture references: ever since shows like Family Guy have shown how successful a great reference to the culture we consume can be, pretty much everything has jumped on the bandwagon, be it kids movies like The Smurfs and Alvin and the Chipmunks, or in riotous comedies such as 21 & 22 Jump Street. Though there's the justifiable fear that an overabundance of pop-culture references can dilute the essence of the original product, we have to admit, what we've heard so far in TMNT sounds pretty hilarious. The scene in question occurs when April snaps the Turtles on top of a roof, and Leonardo then threatens April with his deepest voice possible. It's not long before Raphael interjects, saying, "Hey, look! He's doing his Batman voice!" Though The Lego Movie has pretty much said everything that needs to be said about that damn voice, it's still an unexpectedly funny moment, and as long as the movie doesn't overdose on lines like this, they can be a fun way to give the movie a contemporary, of-the-moment feel.
