10 Things You Need To Know About Terminator: Genisys

5. Matt Smith's Character

A huge question mark within Terminator: Genisys is just who - or what - Matt Smith is playing. The former Doctor Who has his character listed simply as "Tim" on IMDB and has been very quiet about his role. The Entertainment Weekly issue with Genisys on the cover, the first extensive look at the new movie, had "Matt Smith as ???" He's not seen in the trailer, either - although there is speculation that a fight scene taking place in an office setting involves Smith's character, though it cannot be said for certain. Paramount's original press release noted Smith would be playing a new character with a connection to John Connor. However, his signing on to the film came with the news that his role would expand in the second and third films (should they happen) - which means, presumably, that he's playing someone major, who becomes more important later in the story. Here's a possibility: Smith and Jason Clarke, who plays the adult John Connor, appear together in their futuristic battle armour on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. Could Smith be playing a Terminator - a reprogrammed, "good" Terminator similar to the T-800? Could future John Connor be learning from his past, and have a non-human bodyguard?
