10 Things That Almost Completely Changed Spider-Man: Far From Home
8. Matt Damon's Eurotrip
When explaining the idea behind his teen movie take on Spider-Man, Watts cited the films of John Hughes and other 80s teen classics as the inspiration for Homecoming. When it came to Far From Home, meanwhile, he wanted to make a European road trip teen comedy, but the only past movie that he could find as a reference point for this "genre" was forgettable 2004 romp EuroTrip.
If EuroTrip is remembered, though, it is for one thing: a strange Matt Damon cameo as a hard rock singer enjoying a hit single about cuckolding the movie's protagonist. Why is that detail relevant to Far From Home? Well, because by all accounts it was Damon who was Watts's first choice for this movie's villain.
Watts had always wanted a big name actor to play Far From Home's primary antagonist and, before Jake Gyllenhaal was announced as Mysterio back in 2018, Damon (who previously appeared in the MCU in a cameo playing Loki in a piece of Asgardian amateur dramatics) was apparently approached and turned down it down.
Whether the part was always going to be Mysterio, though, remains appropriately mysterious. Rumours at the time instead linked Damon to the role of Kraven the Hunter, a favourite Spider-Man villain for both Holland and Watts.
Both have talked up their desire to see Kraven in a movie, so don't be surprised if he shows up to hunt Spidey down in the third part, either solo or alongside The Vulture as part of a move toward the Sinister Six.
