8. Multiple Black Widows

Scarlett Johansson has completely made the role of Natasha Romanoff her own, turning what could (and often is) simply a one-dimensional fanboy wet dream into a tough, mysterious and sympathetic character. At this point we can't really imagine anybody else in the role but, in the fickle world of Hollywood, there could come a time when Johansson tires of the character, or asks for too much of a raise, or simply gets too old. In which case, replacing her and her character with one of the multiple other Black Widows from the comic books would make a lot of sense! In the meantime, though, getting rid of her or muddying the waters with more characters with the same name would be hella stupid. Romanoff wasn't even the first to hold the Black Widow mantle in the comics, as a matter of fact. That honour went to Claire Voyant (geddit?), who made up for her goofy name by being the very first costumed female superhero. She may have only lasted three years after her debut in 1940, but she made a mark, and cemented the tradition of Black Widows as anti-heroes (her MO was killing baddies and delivering their souls to Satan. And you thought ex-KGB agent Natasha was hardcore). Natasha has been the main Widow ever since then, although for a period in the early noughties she was usurped by Yelena Belova, who was much more loyal to her Russian masters than the traitorous Romanoff, and ended up becoming a full-blown villain. Who is still also called Black Widow, confusingly enough. Due to the popularity of the current actor and not wanting to mess with audience's head, we'll probably be sticking to the one Widow on screen.
