10 Things The Guardians Of The Galaxy Sequel Mustn't Do

2. Use Contrived Means To Link It To Earth/The Avengers

We can only assume that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will be the last film before the titular team meet up with the Earth/Terra-based Avengers. Consequently, the links are going to have to be made towards the end of that movie, so they aren't rushed at the start of Avengers 3, when we assume the two teams will combine to take on Thanos with the Infinity Gauntlet. What we don't want is a forced, contrived and inorganic manner of making the meeting happen i.e. "the Guardians and the Avengers randomly bump in to each other in space just before Thanos launches an assault on Earth - how convenient!" We need something that makes the team-up and the collision of the two team's worlds believable. For example, Peter Quill/Star-Lord could learn that Earth is in danger and, knowing that he may still have family there, he wants to protect them, so he leads his band of misfits there to help, at which point they encounter the Earth-based heroes who are fighting for the same cause.
