Ian Holm was a fantastic Bilbo in The Lord of the Rings, so much so that we wondered how anyone would be able to take his place. Sure, they de-aged him by way of make-up in the Rings trilogy, but it was clear that such an approach would never work for a full-fledged adaptation of The Hobbit. So we were a little nervous about the casting of Martin Freeman - but he has absolutely come through and knocked his portrayal of Bilbo out of the park. He wisely avoided simply aping Holm's mannerisms, and made the younger Bilbo his own. It could have just as easily been an Anakin situation, and we are very, very thankful that it's not. More importantly, however, Freeman manages to surpass the original with his portrayal of the character Agree? Disagree? Add your thoughts below.
