5. Giving Three 6 Mafia An Oscar For Best Original Song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=du_01sqzsck Not that I'm personally begrudging Three 6 Mafia their Oscar success (how could anyone begrudge a group who showed up to the Academy Awards dressed like that^), but there's a strong chance Oscar is, such is the sort of joke it has since become. (Well not really a joke, but a kind of so-and-so doesn't have an Oscar but Three 6 Mafia does, kinda thing). Host John Stewart certainly wasted no time in announcing that it was Three 6 Mafia 1, Martin Scorsese 0, in terms of Oscars, and the group's elated acceptance speech prompted Stewart to proclaim "now that's how you accept an Oscar!". It's true that Three 6 Mafia were a brilliant antithesis to the stuffy, self-serious awards, and in honouring them the Academy perhaps inadvertently highlighted this. Since the group's win in 2006, Oscar has reverted to generally awarding the Best Original Song prize to bigger, brassier, more overtly serious fare, ensuring that Three 6's win feels all the more special - and all the more like an anomaly - in its own bling-and-baseball caps kinda way.
