10 Things The X-Men Franchise Wishes It Could've Done Differently
5. Magneto's Characterisation
Though Magneto proved to be a fantastic antagonist and occasional uneasy ally to the X-Men in the first few movies, it's safe to say that after almost 20 years of his back-and-forth shenanigans, audiences had become truly fed up of it.
By the time Apocalypse rolled around and Magneto massacred literally millions of people only to be Xavier's good 'ol pal by the end of the movie, it wasn't just lazy writing - it was unintentionally hilarious.
Dark Phoenix largely forgets about Magneto's prior atrocities and yet again sees his allegiances flipping on a dime, for though Erik Lehnsherr is supposed to be an ambiguously-scrupled character, his ever-shifting loyalty diverged into self-parody in recent years.
It's a damn shame, because Michael Fassbender really tried to sell whatever he was written to do, but there's only so much even the best actor can convince the audience of.
