10 Things We Learned From Mark Hamill At Star Wars Celebration Europe
9. The Secrecy Of The Script Annoyed Him In A Very Specific Way
While he couldn’t divulge much about Episode VIII, he could talk about the process of all the secrecy that now exists around Star Wars. The explanation Hamill gave was exactly what you want to hear; to ensure any surprises were experienced in the cinema.
But while he accepted that, he did point out how it had been rather irritating. You see, all the scripts for Star Wars are digital and are only unlockable with a very long code, which is great for security, but not great for making notes or doodles (and it sounds like Hamill is a very visual memoriser).
As a result, he’s actually allowed to have single physical copies of the film, but only one scene at a time and under the pressure of giving away the whole film. He gave further insight into the actual script process:
“On the call sheets, nobody has a name, everyone’s just a number. So you’re number 11, someone else is 33. You’re looking at the call sheet, saying, ‘Oh, I love 22’s work, she’s twice as good as 11.’ But they’re not doing it to annoy me – they just want the surprise to be in the movie theatres, not on the internet. Who wants to know what you’re getting for your birthday? I had two sisters who used to go up to my parents’ closet and check my birthday presents every year.”
