As rapturously received as the trailer has been, many fans have noted the somewhat peculiar behaviour of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), who seems a little over-eager to help Peter erase the knowledge of his superhero identity from the entire world.

Though Strange has certainly proven himself arrogant in the past, this does feel like a bit of stretch, and while it's entirely possible the scene plays very differently in the final cut, it prompted some fans to suggest that something more sinister is afoot.

Many are already convinced that this isn't actually Doctor Strange at all but an impostor posing as the Sorcerer Supreme in order to manipulate Peter. And the popular pick?

Mephisto, the demonic magician known for making Faustian bargains, and who was widely expected to appear in WandaVision earlier this year yet ultimately didn't.

A clue to Mephisto's presence may even be hiding in plain sight during the sequence where the press corps harasses Peter as he arrives at school.

A spectator's sign reads "Devil in disguise," which feels like a loaded nod towards Doctor Strange actually being Mephisto.
