10 Things We Want To See From Disney's Live-Action The Lion King
1. To Actually Be A "Reimagining"
As far as storytelling goes, The Lion King (or animated Hamlet as is less commonly known) is quite possibly the closest that the Walt Disney Company has to perfection outside of Pixar. Therefore, tampering with this ’94 classic already poses more challenges than Favreau faced with The Jungle Book.
Coming off such a high, it may be too easy, and tempting, for Favreau to adopt a Hakuna Matata approach to the whole idea, losing sight of what “reimagining” actually means in the process.
It’s fearful that The Lion King adaptation will receive the same treatment as The Jungle Book: a remake through technology with only the bare necessities (pun intended) kept intact - and nobody wants that.
The remake must say something new about its tale, to truly reimagine The Lion King from a storytelling standpoint a la Maleficent, as well as everything else, and to not just rely on its CGI merits and quirky titbits to justify its arrival.
