10 Things We'd Love To See In Star Trek Into Darkness Sequels

1. The Doomsday Machine

Many of the items included on this list would make for interesting references rather than primary plot points, but this one would certainly shape the direction of the film if it were to be included. Much like the Genesis Device this interstellar threat would be a nod towards the potentially disastrous effects of the nuclear deterrent which in many ways has kept the planet on a perilous precipice; one superpower will not attack the other in the knowledge that a nuclear retaliation would destroy nearly all life on the planet. The season two episode The Doomsday Machine of The Original Series was built on these tensions, and was spectacular in showing where this threat could lead to. It would be great to see the reboot universe tackle a taboo subject like this; Into Darkness had warmongering undertones, but declined into an action packed bonanza rather than dealing with the problems head on. Politicising the franchise may not be the smartest move in terms of guaranteeing financial success, but it would accomplish something similar to what Gene Roddenberry€™s brainchild had; it could inspire hope in a new generation. As global tensions rise, it would be lovely to have a Star Trek that serves not only as a means of escapism, but as a means of solving the issues of the day.
