10 Things You Didn't Know About Avatar

6. The Holographic Stamps Tie-In

When a blockbuster film is released, the massive machine gears of marketing grind into action, and in 2009 it was no different for Avatar. From its toys, to posters, soundtrack albums and even a McDonalds happy meal tie in, all the usual elements were in place.

Avatar's marketeers, while not reaching the surreal sights of an R2D2 aquarium, or the Django Unchained action figure, still found an unusual way to reach their audience

For the film's release in France in 2009 you could experience the unique thrill of sending your letters in the post featuring love interest Sully and Neytiri. The images from the film were printed on special holographic foil stamps to create a 3D effect. France were not alone in this and in 2018 US Mail released a series of 10 stamps featuring bioluminescent animals accompanied by a stamp with characters and animals from Avatar.

Things become even weirder with a set of Gambon stamps featuring the cast, came up for sale online but are in fact a series of Russian fakes! Even with Avatar, take nothing a face value.
