10 Things You Didn't Know About Avatar
3. The Six Legged Problem
James Cameron is known for being obsessed with detail for each film he makes, famously wanting all the tech in his films to be able to work in the real world. On Avatar he even controlled how much wind came off the rotor blades of the assault ships, all the way to how pink the Na’vi ears looked as the light shone through them.
This level of detail extends fully to all the flora and fauna of Pandora. The massive plant life is made possibly by the planets lower level of gravity, to the bio luminesces which all animals have on the planet is inspired by the moons complex night time eco system.
All the animals dwelling on Pandora except for the Na’vi, have six legs making them hexapods, be it a Thanator, Direhorse, Viperwolf or the enormous dragon like Great Leonpteryx.
This biological feature posed an enormous challenge to the animators at Weta Workshop, who were responsible for bring the animals to life. As no mammals on earth move or walk with this many legs, they had to to devise whole new skeletons structures and musculature to make the creatures movement appear natural and to satisfy Cameron exacting requirements.
