10 Things You Didn’t Know About Batman Returns

9. Michelle Pfeiffer Wasn€™t The Only Choice For Catwoman

Catwoman became one of the most famous roles of Michelle Pfeiffer€™s career, but it€™s a part that she very nearly didn€™t play at all. Annette Bening of The Grifters and American Beauty was initially cast as the latex-loving feline obsessive Selina Kyle, but she eventually had to quit the film after getting pregnant. After Bening€™s departure, a host of famous actresses went up for the part. Madonna, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Cher, Bridget Fonda and Susan Sarandon were all in the running at various stages. Blade Runner star Sean Young €“ after losing her role as Vicki Vale in Batman due to a horse-riding injury €“ lobbied hard for the part, making herself a costume and turning up at Warner Bros demanding an audition. She also appeared on TV in this homemade outfit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyUx73RJ51o Ultimately, Burton cast Pfeiffer after just one meeting, despite not being familiar with her work. She was paid $3 million - $2 million more than Bening was due to get - plus box office bonuses. If you think that sounds a lot, consider that Michael Keaton apparently took home $11 million for portraying Batman/Bruce Wayne in the movie.
