9. They Decided To Make A Film Noir As It Was Easy To Produce

The Coens like to take apart and subvert genre in their work, and in Blood Simple, they target the film noir genre.

But really, this was mostly done out of practicality. When developing their first feature, they wanted to make something that could be cheap and easy to make - and film noir fitted the bill perfectly.

With this, they could include a small cast of characters, a limited amount of locations and a minuscule budget and say that this was all part of referencing the film noir genre. It was very clever of them indeed.
