Cyclops's visor has a lot of uses. Primarily, it stops his powers from constantly destroying everything he looks at. It also gives him all sorts of control over his abilities, varying the size and strength of the blasts. The power of the beams is proportional to the distance and diameter. In addition, a touch-sensitive pad allows him to open and close the visor's aperture even if he can't reach the dial on the side. All of this is common knowledge. But what fewer people realise is the affect that the visor has on Cyclops's vision. Because the visor (and the glasses that he wears the rest of the time) are made of a substance called ruby-quartz, most readers assume that everything he sees is tinted red. Indeed, scenes in animated adaptations usually follow this logic, presenting scenes as though someone was holding a piece of red cellophane in front of the camera. However, Grant Morrison's New X-men #131 revealed that the ruby quartz actually tinges the light yellow, not red. This still has the effect of making Cyclops colour blind for all intents and purposes.
With a (nearly) useless degree in English literature and a personal trainer qualification he's never used, Freddie spends his times writing things that he hopes will somehow pay the rent. He's also a former professional singer, and plays the saxophone and ukulele. He's not really used to talking about himself in the third person, and would like to stop now, thanks.
