10 Things You Didn't Know About Hocus Pocus

9. It's (Somewhat) Historically Inaccurate

We can all agree Hocus Pocus wasn't aiming for factual accuracy when creating a lighthearted Halloween film. But there are a few flaws in the timeline.

First of all, The Sanderson sisters are hanged for practicing witch craft on the date of the 31st of October, 1693. But Salem witch trials had been abolished by May 1693.

Additionally, Winifred, Sarah and Mary talk about using margarine when cooking quite often. However, this food product wasn't invented until the 1800s, after they died in the late 17th century. There's a fan theory that the Sandersons actually discovered margaric acid but didn't share it with the rest of the world, hence how they knew about the butter substitute.

Also, the story mostly takes place on a school day on Halloween in the year 1993, but Halloween fell on a Sunday in October 1993

Do these anachronisms affect the enjoyment of Hocus Pocus? Absolutely not.
