Leonardo DiCapro could have been very nearly been a star in Hocus Pocus. Omri Katz, who eventually landed the part of Max Dennison, was very ill at the time of his audition and was initially rejected. The role of Max was then offered to DiCaprio, but he turned it down to appear in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, released the same year.

He's not the only well-known celebrity who could have been in the film. Rosie O'Donnell was originally given the character of Mary Sanderson, eventually won by Kathy Najimy. Rosie revealed on her blog that she turned down the offer to work with Bette Midler because she didn't want to be a "scary witch".

Jennifer Lopez also wanted the role of Sarah Sanderson, but lost out to Sarah Jessica Parker.
