10 Things You Didn't Know About Inglourious Basterds

1. You'll Never Know Why 'Basterds' Was Spelt Incorrectly

Was it a typo? Was it intentional? If it was intentional, what's the meaning behind it? Was it misspelt to evade censorship? Was it misspelt purely for the purposes of increased media coverage? Pretty much all of the above questions have been asked at one point or another concerning the reasoning behind the use of Basterds instead of Bastards, and the sad fact is that we'll probably never know the real reason that Tarantino decided to go with Basterds. In a recent interview, the director stated that he'll never reveal the meaning (if there even is one) behind the intentional spelling mistake, because doing so would ruin any mystery behind it. That's fair enough, unsolved mysteries are always more interesting than solved ones, but concealing the reasoning behind using the letter E instead of A seems a little necessary: it's hardly a worldwide conspiracy. Whatever speculative answer you choose to believe, just know that Tarantino will never tell you that you're right, even if you do guess correctly. Personally, our money's on increased media coverage. For anyone who remembers the original release of the film, you'll probably remember the intense scrutiny that mainstream media outlets were placing on the 'Basterds' spelling, so if that was the case, then Tarantino obviously got exactly what he wanted.
