6. A New Hope Started Shooting Whilst He Was Still "Luke Starkiller"
Though it's often assumed that Luke's name went from "Luke Starkiller" to "Luke "Skywalker" during the script development process, the original Star Wars flick actually started shooting with that original name in tact - and for a good few months. Lines of dialogue were shot with Mark Hamill and many of the other actors using the surname "Starkiller," before Lucas decided that the name carried too much negatively with it: he felt that it made Luke sound like a bad guy. "I did because I felt a lot of people were confusing him with someone like Charles Manson," the director explained. The only scene that required Hamill to say his own name was the one where he broke Princess Leia out of the holding cell on the Death Star, famously announcing: "I'm Luke Skywalker. I'm here to rescue you!" According to Hamill, he originally recorded the line as "I'm Luke Starkiller. I'm here to rescue you!" Presumably, it was later dubbed.
