Once the final cast for a movie has been decided a film starts to take its real shape - the characters are informed by the appearance and nuance of the actors and you being to identify one with the other. Up until that point, however, the film has the potential to go in a number of different directions depending on the casting choices, and Boogie Nights was no exception. Boogie Nights has achieved its cult status through the wonderful work of the ensemble cast, but it could have been a completely different film. Imagine if Gwyneth Paltrow had taken on the part of Rollergirl, or Bill Murray hadn't turned down the role of Jack Horner and a potentially very different movie begins to emerge. Likewise, Samuel L. Jackson would have made for a very different Buck Swope compared to Don Cheadle, while Joaquin Phoenix would have kick-started his working relationship with Anderson many years before were it not for the fact that he didn't like the idea of playing a porn star.
