10 Things You Didn't Know About Prometheus

9. Charlize Theron Was Originally Going To Play Elizabeth Shaw

It's always hard to retrospectively look at a 'what could have been' situation without some form of bias, and that concept is no more evident than it is here. Theron was originally cast as the main protagonist of Prometheus (Elizabeth Shaw), eventually pulling out of the role due to prior commitments. The prior commitment in question was Mad Max: Fury Road (which is still yet to be released, by the way), however, Theron's schedule opened up closer to the date that Prometheus was due to start filming. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on personal taste), the part had already been re-cast, with Naoomi Rapace replacing Theron as Shaw: Scott still wanted Theron to be a part of the film however, and cast her as Meredith Vickers. How different the film would have felt if Theron had played her originally intended part of Shaw is anyone's guess, but the actor isn't exactly renowned for playing compassionate characters. We're not saying she would have been a bad fit at all, but Vickers is arguably the part that suited her more to begin with anyway. But like we said, it's hard to be unbiased in retrospect.
