10 Things You Didn't Know About Prometheus

4. The Plot Was Inspired By Erich Von Däniken's 'Chariots Of The Gods'

Instead of unintentionally starting a debate on Hollywood's inability to come up with new ideas, we're just going to say that Prometheus drew more than just a little inspiration from Erich Von Däniken's Chariots Of The Gods. Däniken's 1968 book hypothesises that man was visited numerous times throughout ancient history by extraterrestrials who, being far more advanced in terms of technological achievement than us lowly humans, were regarded as gods due to their technology being interpreted as supernatural in nature. The above entry, detailing how Jesus was originally meant to be part of the film's story, also ties into Däniken's book on the subject, and while there are obvious differences between both Prometheus and Chariots Of The Gods (i.e. the Alien background), there's little room for suggesting coincidence - especially as Scott himself cited the book as being an inspiration for the film. However, Däniken's book is hardly innovative either, being heavily criticised on numerous occasions for being extremely similar to the writings of H.P Lovecraft.
