10 Things You Didn't Know About RoboCop

6. Reclining Leather Seats And Really Shitty Gas Mileage!

The police cars used in RoboCop are a modified version of the Ford Taurus. The original idea was for RoboCop to have a specially designed car along the same lines as the Batmobile. Known primarily as ''Turbo Car,'' it was designed, built and made ready for filming. However, when it was brought on set, the crew started laughing and made it clear that ''Turbo Car'' looked naff. Verhoeven started panicking, at this late stage, one of the major props of the film couldn't be used. He spotted a Ford Taurus drive past and decided that should be the car used in the film by the Police and RoboCop. Ford were not interested in any way to be associated with RoboCop and declined the offer of giving the production Taurus's to use in return for publicity, so all the cars you see in the film had to be bought. One of the Taurus's main competitors at the time was GM's Pontiac 6000. The 6000 SUX in the film is a direct dig at the Pontiac 6000.
