10 Things You Didn't Know About Starship Troopers

1. The Film Features One Of The Biggest Explosions In Film History

Made in an era where practical effects were still heavily used alongside CGI, instead of just using computer-generated effects for everything, the special effects in Starship Troopers are nothing short of spectacular, earning the film its only Oscar nomination.

Notably, most of the explosive set pieces on bug planet Klendathu are real, with digital effects added to complement the real flames and dust clouds. These real-life elements of these scenes were orchestrated by John Richardson, a special effects legend, best known for his work on the James Bond franchise.

One of the most impressive scenes in the entire film depicts a squadron of TAC Fighters unleashing fiery hell on the hordes of warrior bugs below. The explosions are massive, tearing the unsuspecting creatures to shreds.

This particular scene, the longest rolling explosion in special effects history (at the time at least), was something of a passion project for John Richardson and featured tonnes of explosives detonated sequentially over a mile of destruction. It went on for so long that only a short section was used in the final film but the end result is nothing short of stunning.
