10 Things You Didn't Know About The Matrix Trilogy
8. Hands-On Keanu
Rubbery CGI replicants aside, Keanu Reeves did the majority of the stunt work in the Matrix trilogy himself, while Chad Stahelski, Reeves' Matrix stunt double and future John Wick director, managed the rest.
This includes the nerve-shattering window scene from the first act of the first film, in which a pre-pill Neo has to climb out of his office window and edge along the building's ledges in an attempt to escape the agents coming to arrest him. In what would surely be a breach of every health and safety regulation under the sun, Reeves stepped out onto the ledge without wire support, risking life and limb for that perfect shot.
Reeves' stunt work also extends to the now-legendary bullet time sequence on the roof in the first film. As Neo faces off against an agent, he bends backwards against gravity and dodges his adversary's bullets in slow motion. Though to younger contemporary viewers it may just seem like some very slick CGI, it is in fact only the backgrounds and bullet trails that were added during post-production; for once in The Matrix, what you see really is what you get.
