10 Things You Didn't Know About Woody Allen

5. The Oscars

Woody-Allen-bv01

Woody Allen has been nominated for 23 Academy Awards since his first nominations for Annie Hall in 1978 and has himself won four, three of which were for Best Original Screenplay for Annie Hall, Hannah and Her Sisters and more recently Midnight in Paris. The other award was for Best Director for Annie Hall. Although he has been nominated this many times, so many in fact he holds the record in the Best Original Screenplay category as he's been nominated 15 times, Allen has made a point of not attending the Oscars ceremony, stating-
"I have no regard for that kind of ceremony. I just don't think they know what they're doing. When you see who wins those things €” or who doesn't win them €” you can see how meaningless this Oscar thing is. ... I know it sounds terrible, but winning that Oscar for 'Annie Hall' didn't mean anything to me."
The only time he has made an appearance at the awards ceremony was in 2002 to make act as an ambassador for New York after the 9/11 attacks, where he made heartfelt and funny speech encouraging filmmakers to come to the city and continue to make films there.
