10 Things You Learn Rewatching Alien

4. The Remastered Sound Is Incredible

As absurdly good as the new 4K restoration of Alien looks, seeing it on the big screen also underlines just how impeccable the film's sound design is (which was also remastered for this new release).

The film benefits enormously from a high-spec cinema sound system, of course, emphasising both the eerie, quiet hum of the Nostromo and the uncaring vacuum of space. It is a film that bleeds pure atmosphere, and the subtle soundscape accounts for a large part of why.

It's easy to take these flourishes for granted on a home viewing, but experienced in near-ideal conditions, it's baffling that the film didn't receive any Oscar attention for its splendid sound work.

In addition to all the brilliant environmental sound, Jerry Goldsmith's iconic score is of course wonderfully integrated into the mix, remaining the easy soundtrack high-point for the series (and boasting a leitmotif that the franchise continues to dine out on today).

If you're waiting for Alien's 4K Blu-ray release, make sure you've got a primo sound system ready to go (or in the very least, not your TV's tinny inner speakers).
