10 Things You Learn Rewatching Halloween (2007)
3. It Over-Explains Everything
In the lead up to the theatrical release of this film, Zombie infamously stated that one of the biggest changes he'd made to the core story was that Michael Myers wouldn't know how to drive in this film. As he would go on to state;
"That always bothered me. They would always play that off like someone must have given him lessons, but you know no one gave him lessons! He's in a maximum-security prison! So, no, he doesn't drive."
So instead of hijacking a car and driving to Haddonfield from Smith's Grove, Michael walks the full hundred miles between the two points over the course of fewer than twenty-four hours. See the issue here? In attempting to 'fix' something about the original, Zombie over-explained it and only dug himself deeper.
This happens a lot throughout the film because, again, Zombie is not one for subtlety. Everything from where Loomis bought his gun, how Michael chose that mask and knife, how Michael got the jumpsuit, how Michael learned to 'look past the walls' and become silent is given a backstory. All of it plays out in excruciating detail that harm the film rather than helping it.
These over explanations don't add anything of note, they're just awkwardly jammed into the narrative and frequently bring the entire film's momentum screeching to a halt. All in the name of indulging Zombie's fan fiction fixes.
