10 Things You Learn Rewatching Halloween 4: The Return Of Michael Myers (1988)

6. The Love Triangle

Halloween 4 suffers a lot from excessive character syndrome. This is where a horror film overpopulates itself with characters in the first act so as to provide that much more meat for the grinder when the killing begins in act two. And the biggest casualty of Halloween 4's thirst for a higher death count is the love triangle.

Rachel is dating Brady, who works at the store with Kelly, and Brady and Kelly wind up sleeping together when Rachel can't go out with Brady on Halloween night. As the cherry on top, Kelly is the sheriff's daughter, meaning they all get to spend way too much screen time together when the bulk of the second act moves to the sheriff's house.

But Brady and Kelly have no character arcs or redeeming features to speak of. They have no purpose in the film, other than to be lambs to the slaughter. So in an attempt to make them seem not so pointless, they're all burdened with this flat and dull melodrama that wouldn't even cut it on an episode of Days of Our Lives.

Luckily though, this makes Kelly's death by shotgun-impaling that much more joyful to watch, because it means this subplot is finally over.
