10 Things You Learn Rewatching Halloween 4: The Return Of Michael Myers (1988)
7. The Mask's Downfall
Hindsight being twenty-twenty, Halloween 4 marks the beginning of an issue that would haunt the franchise for decades to come; not getting the mask right.
Infamously, Michael's original mask was a bleached William Shatner mask that Carpenter and co. made by hand to save money. That mask was used in the first two films, but following Michael's simmering demise at the end of Halloween II, Debra Hill gave away tons of Michael-related props to the cast and crew, including the original mask.
This put the team on Halloween 4 in a bit of a pickle when it was decided Michael would be returning. They rushed out to buy William Shatner masks of their own and tried to replicate the process. But it just doesn't work. The facial structure of the mask isn't the same and it's much looser than the original.
This blunts moments like the mask's first on-screen appearance in the film, as it is just never able to recapture the simplicity of the original mask.
And sadly, the masks only get worse with each subsequent sequel.
