10 Things You Learn Rewatching Halloween 4: The Return Of Michael Myers (1988)
3. The Rooftop Sequence
This sequence is the film at its absolute best, charged with genuine tension and capitalizing on Jamie and Rachel's relationship in a meaningful way.
After Michael chases them through Sherrif Meeker's house, Rachel climbs up onto the roof with Jamie on her back. With the unstable shingles of the roof visibly slipping and sliding their feet, Rachel's having a hard enough time keeping them alive as it is. And then Michael gets thrown into the mix, following them out onto the roof.
It's a sequence that pushes Rachel to her absolute limits. Her singular goal here is to protect Jamie, but every other element of the scene adds another layer of conflict to her struggle. So when she attempts to lower Jamie to safety using an electrical cord, reiterating to her over and over, "I've got you, I've got you", it becomes all the more compelling when she fails.
Michael swipes at her, forcing her to drop Jamie and fall off the roof herself. It's a great sequence of give-and-take action beats that shows just how strong this film's central characters and themes are, if the film would just give them the time to shine.
