10 Things You Learn Rewatching Halloween 5: The Revenge Of Michael Myers (1989)

6. Grating New Additions

The film gets off to a good start with a strong first act that establishes some strong characterizations and even kills off the previous film's protagonist, Rachel, making it seem like anything is possible.

But to fill time before Michael works his way to the real stars of the show, Jamie and Loomis, the film has to spend the entire second act introducing and killing off an entirely new cast of characters who are only vaguely tied-in to the central narrative.

Characters like Tina, Mike, Sam, and Spitz are all about as one-dimensional as they come. Tina is just quirky Rachel. Mike has a car. Samantha is planning on having sex. And Spitz is just annoying. This is as far as any of their characterizations go.

This means that even sequences that are well-orchestrated by Othenin-Girard, like the farmhouse setpiece, they're not as impactful as they should be because viewers never come to care about any of these new additions. They're just annoying and they bog down the middle of the film.
