10 Things You Learn Watching Halloween (2018)
9. It's Genuinely Funny
When it was initially announced that Danny McBride and David Gordon Green were to be two of the most primary creative forces behind the film, there was immediate concern from fans. McBride and Green's names were much more synonymous with comedy than horror, having worked together on prior films like Pineapple Express and Your Highness.
Thus, to assuage these fears they've had to spend a lot of time over the last few years maintaining that comedy was not their focus with this film. Which makes it a genuinely welcome surprise that this film is easily the funniest film in the entire franchise.
From smaller moments, like Dave getting shot down when questioning if what happened to Laurie was really that bad by today's standards, to stand-out scene stealers like Jibrail Nantambu as Julian, this film is pretty packed with consistently effective laughs. Julian's exchange with Vicky before going to bed alone elicits more laughs than the majority of comedies released this year.
Yet the film manages to strike an incredible balance between the laughs and the horror. The core ingredients are always very much horror, with just the right amount of comedy thrown in as an unexpected but welcome seasoning.
